Hi, Howard ! Don is right 100 % , and I've found in my library some interesting details... U-123 was a IX B Type, and I've no technical data about fuel tanks available with me.But , for VII Type, there is a reference book , "Anatomy of the ship, The Type VII U-Boat",written by David Westwood, Conway Maritime Press, available with Abebooks if you're interested, but not

Guten Abend, Meine Damen und Herren ! (I've learnt a lot from VEK lately about acceptable greetings on this forum...) More seriously, the explanation I have in mind is that "Wintergarten" was the only place where it was possible to have a cigarette, and only during day period. At night, it was strictly forbidden, some CO allowing pipe, but not on a regular basis. This was in compari

Hi, Volker, Thanks a lot for your little tip about Ladies and G.,I've not met G.since a (too?)long time, but for Ladies, in family circle only, I've a huge stock. Please remember "Das Boot" miniseries, when Der Alte is visiting Diesels room and talks with Johann :"First quality of a seaman is cautiousness, all of us have been taught that by the handbook..."Certainl

Hi, Fernando, A very well known case is also U-203,where, after the silly accident which took KL Mützelburg's life in the middle of the Atlantic,IWO,Oblt.zur See Hans Seidel, took over and sailed back to Lorient, which was raised safely. Enjoy your day.

Hello, Vidar ! Is U-441 an unique case ? I've read 2 minutes back, in a newsletter written by a respected expert ( Our friend L.Patterson, uboataces webmaster) that it was also the case of U-505 after suicide of KL P. Zschech...Any help would be welcome. Thanks in advance & Enjoy your week-end.

Hi, Joff ! The answer is YES.Connection is due to the fact that U-30 (KL F-J. LEMP ) was the first U-Boot to dock in Lorient after surrender of French Armies, and also that U-110 , with same CO,belonged to 2° U-Flotille, which was based in Lorient. If you can read french, you may like to visit following website : You go to chapter "U-Boote", and after to sub-chapter "Centres

Hi, Saskia, Buying this magazine on the net without a credit card is not so much complicated with this bookshop.Eventhough I have a credit card, they have not accepted it because I was a first-time customer, not registered in their files.Procedure as follows : You place your order by mail, they send you a "pro-forma"invoice with the amount including postage and indicating their account

Good morning, Saskia, Ken's advice is a very good one...I purchased my copy of this magazine through Christian Schmidt channel, and it has worked very smoothly.A small drawback is that payment channels are a bit slow , through international bank transfer, but after receipt of payment, delivery is rather quick. On top, this magazine is first class stuff. For your info, I live in France. Ha

Hello, Saskia ! Please don't excuse yourself for being a know-it all...You are right at 100 % ! In addition, this behaviour is more suitable with a Matrose's character than with an Obersteuermann's one. Enjoy your day.

Good evening, Gerhard, I'm afraid that Groth was not so much an irreproachable example...It is an historical fact, described in LGB book (But not in Petersen's film), that following a faulty identification by himself of a passenger steamer , who was neutral and not enemy, he fired a torpedo against it, which luckily did not explode due to some technical failure In any case, he left U-9

Hi, Gerhard ! If you've seen "Das Boot" miniseries on TV, you remember perhaps the scene where IWO ( Groth) is shaving in the toilets when some other crew members are waiting for more day-to-day physical needs...If my memory is good, one character, Obersteuermann Kriechbaum, shakes the door with following statement :"Only one toilet for fifty men, and,in addition,we have a que

Hi, Gerhard ! Groth passed away on 10/04/1997, in Mexico City, where he was born on 20/08/1917. No indications found concerning Grade and Hermann about the fact that they may be still alive. The only thing I know is that Grade survived the War. Good evening.

Hi, VEK ! Correct me please if I'm wrong, but I believe that "Hitlergruss" became mandatory in German Armed Forces ( Wehrmacht, Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine)after failed attempt to kill AH in June 1944, thus replacing usual military salute. Enjoy your evening, mon ami.

Hi, Paul, I've checked with uboataces website, insignia section.U-1198 has no registered emblem, and U-446 is really showing "Sharks with gallows".But could you explain the link between crew 39 and this emblem ? I'm a bit puzzled... In any case, I am interested with a copy of the picture.E-mail as follows: jeannoelmul

Hello,Inge ! Just back from abroad, I've discovered your post. Being French, I've some ideas , some of them to be confirmed, about U-Bunkers which may be considered as Museums. Brest, definitely : NO.Lorient-Kéroman,which I have visited 20 years back,at that time was still used by French Navy, but visits were organized at that time.French Navy is out now, but bunker is still there an
