31. U 505
Just came back from our yearly visit to the MSI and the U 505. They now allow photos to be taken inside but no camera flash is allowed. As beautiful as she was the first time I saw her. Happy Christmas all. vS

It was beyond complicated; required supernatural station keeping precision; hookup and off had to be done on the surface. Transfer rate was slow. It could be done but only under near-perfect conditions. vS

Having seen the U 505 a dozen or more times I always wondered about bends in the propeller tips. The one one starboard has a more pronounced one. Does anyone know if these were prior or after the capture? How much of a sound or performance issue would or did they cause? Peace, vS

I tried a search but couldn't find an answer. I've been aboard the U 505 a dozen plus time and before her most recent move got to explore areas not 'allowed'. But why was Type's control room peeriscope removed? Just a cost saving measure? Peace, vS

Friends, In the opening bar scene the 2WO tells Werner: "Prosit, Lieutenant. To the Freichor Tonitz." They then cock their arms at right angles and drain their glasses. I was wondering what the toast means and the significance of the arm positions. All the best. vS

Friends, I've been meaning to ask this question since November but, as I'm sure we all know, there aren't enough hours in the day. Every year for the past seven or eight years my girlfriend and I have gone to Chicago and try to visit the MSI. Each time I go through the U 505 I see something new and get told by the tour guide to "stay with the group" because I te

Hopefully taking my yearly trip to her in a few weeks. They started the "No photo" rule last year if I remember correctly. Always a pleasure to visit though. Plus this year they have a Star Wars exibit at MSI; if one is interested in such things. vS

MPC, Thanks for your reply. Can I assume that the article is incorrect or are they refering to something else such as he was the senior U Boat captain, etc? Sorry so long for the reply; health related issues. v.S

Friends, In the article in 'U-Boot Im Focus' about the Atlantic/Python sinkings; resupplies; etc it mentions on pg. 35 that Rogge from the ATLANTIC took command of the flotilla (after a "brief dispute") in spite of the fact that Eckermann was senior captain. If this was the case why was command given to Rogge instead of Eckermann? Thanks, v.S

Hello All, I saw the availability of special tours of groups of 20+ but thought maybe one could 'hook up' with another group or that they had just a higher priced admission opportunity available. Assuming I make it there again in the fall I was hoping for a special tour but don't think I could assemble 20+ at the time when Michele and I usually go. Before the move in 2005

Solomon You have to pay a modest fee to go aboard her but have free rein to look outside. Very impressive when you first see her (and every time after). I was honored to attened her 'recommissioning' ceremony on June 4, 2005. I've been to see her every year for the past six or seven years. I have always also lit a candle at the Church I attend in Chicago for everyone here at
