24 August 1943, shortly after 07.05: Lt. William's attack.
U-185, after being strafed by Lt. O'Neill, is still travelling at 10–12 knots on a 330º heading as Lt. Williams' D/Cs splash on her port side. No one can be seen in the conning tower as both 20mm guns, unmanned, are pointed towards the sky. The U-boat already trails the "dense black low-lying smoke" noted by Lt. Williams in his report, whose cause at this stage remains unclear (revving-up diesels exhaust plume?).
