Werner Zapf joined the Kriegsmarine in 1936. After undergoing U-boat training from Aug 1942 to Sept 1943, he served as a Watch Officer with the 11th Flotilla until Feb 1944.

He was assigned as Watch Officer to U-965 from Feb - Aug 1944 before beginning U-boat Commander Training with the 24th (Training) Flotilla. He then took over command of the small school boat U-61 on 2 Dec 1944.

From March 1945, Oblt. Zapf served in 3.ULD (U-Lehrdivision, U-boat Training Division) Naval Anti-tank Brigade until he met his death in combat in Germany on 3 May 1945.
