Unno von Fischel was the son of an admiral in the German Navy, Hermann von Fischel. Hermann commanded the U-65 during WWI.

When Unno's boat, U-374, was sunk by the British submarine Unbeaten he and all but one of his men died (Niestlé, 1998). U-374 had been damaged two days earlier and was unable to dive on its return to port when ambushed by the British submarine.
