The Emblems

Horses

The first Commander of U-636 was KL Hans Hildebrandt, born in Bremen. Bremen is in Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony).

This emblem is a reference to a decoration seen to this day on the gable end of farmhouse roofs in North Germany, particularly Lower Saxony. Horses were sacred to the Germanic tribe of the Saxons, and these representations were probably intended to guard against evil powers. (This may be why horse meat is not eaten in Germany today.) The coat of arms of Lower Saxony is a white horse on a red field.
