Notes on loss

On 17 Oct, 1941, HMS Gladiolus (K 34) (LtCdr Harry M.C. Sanders, DSO, DSC, RNR), escorting the convoy SC-48, was ordered to pick up survivors from several torpedoed ships and doing so fell behind the convoy. She was last seen about 01.00 hours and was reported missing thereafter.

Between 01.28 and 02.14 hours on 17 Oct, 1941, U-558 fired torpedoes at several ships in the convoy, sinking the W.C. Teagle , Erviken and Rym and probably HMS Gladiolus (K 34). But it is also possible that the corvette was sunk during an attack from U-432 (Schultze) between 03.42 and 04.00 hours.
