History

HMS Sturgeon was lent to the Royal Netherlands Navy while refitting at the Devonport Dockyard (Plymouth, U.K.). On 14 October 1943 she was commissioned in the Royal Netherlands Navy and renamed Zeehond. Decommissioned by the Royal Netherlands Navy at Dundee on 14 September 1945. Returned to R.N. control at Dundee on 17 November 1945. Scrapped at Granton, Scotland in 1947.

With her refit completed HrMs Zeehond (Lt.Cdr. Baron D.T. Mackay, RNN) shifted from Plymouth to Portsmouth. (1)

11 Nov 1943
HrMs Zeehond (Lt.Cdr. Baron D.T. Mackay, RNN) departed Portsmouth for the Clyde. She made the passage together with HMS Sunfish (Lt. H.J. Bartlett, DSC, RN). They were escorted initially by the Free French submarine chaser Chasseur 5. HMS Cutty Sark (Cdr.(retired) R.H. Mack, RN) later took over the escort for onwards passage northwards through the Irish Sea. (2)

HrMs Zeehond (Lt.Cdr. Baron D.T. Mackay, RNN) arrived at Rothesay where she joined the 7th Submarine Flotilla for training duties. (2)

HMS Proteus (Lt. H.D. Verschoyle, DSC, RN) conducted exercises in the Clyde area with a training class of new submariners. She also served as target for HrMs Zeehond (Lt.Cdr. Baron D.T. Mackay, RNN). (3)

HrMs Zeehond (Lt.Cdr. Baron D.T. Mackay, RNN) departed Rothesay for St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada.

Zeehond was to proceed to Bermuda to aid in A/S training from that base.

Early in the morning HrMs Zeehond (Lt.Cdr. Baron D.T. Mackay, RNN) set course to return to the U.K. So far she had been making the passage in very bad weather which resulted in a very high fuel consumption. There was now not enough fuel on board to reach St. Johns. (4)

HrMs Zeehond (Lt.Cdr. Baron D.T. Mackay, RNN) departed Lerwick for Rothesay. Passage was made together with 3580 HMS Vampire (Lt. C.W. Taylor, RNR). They were escorted by HMS Annet (T/Lt. E.H. Andrews, RNVR) until the Pentland Firth when HMS Crowlin (A/Skr.Lt. A. Smith, RNR) took over the escort. Also HrMs O 19 (Lt.Cdr. A. van Karnebeek, RNN) joined for onward passage to Holy Loch. (4)

They were escorted by the Canadian corvette HMCS Camrose (T/A/Lt.Cdr. L.R. Pavillard, RCNR). (4)
