USS R-9 (Lt. A.B. Catlin, USN) conducted exercises off Bermuda with ships of Escort Division 4, which was made up of the destroyer escorts USS Pillsbury (Lt.Cdr. G.W. Cassleman, USNR, with COMCORTDIV 4, T/Cdr. F.S. Hall, USN on board), USS Pope ( Lt.Cdr. R.J. Montgomery, USNR), USS Flaherty (Lt.Cdr. H.C. Duff, USNR), USS Frederick C. Davis (Lt. J.R. Crosby, USNR), USS Chatelain (Lt.Cdr. D.S. Knox, USNR) and USS Neunzer (Lt.Cdr. V.E. Gex, USNR).
On completion of the exercises late in the evening USS Pope parted company to escort USS R-9 back to port. Early on the 7th, a crewmember of USS R-9 was lost overboard. A search was undertaken but he was not found.
The remaining ships of Escort Division 4 remained at sea.
