Career information

George Kelly was born in Ashington, England, on April 23, 1913. He was the fifth of five children in his family and in 1929, his mother and brother decided George should become an officer cadet with the British Merchant Marine. He set off to sea, from Newcastle England, bound for Corner Brook, Newfoundland, aboard the SS Kenilworth. He went on to serve on a number of vessels until 1942, when he joined the Canadian Navy. Before leaving Venezuela for Halifax, he opted to sail on an oil tanker which was torpedoed and sunk. He joined the RCN as First Mate and served on HMCS Fort William for most of the balance of the war. He served as ship's captain on both the Fort William and Wallaceburg before retiring from the service in 1946. He went on to serve as First Mate on the Hudson's Bay paddle boat, Distributor, before settling down as a life insurance salesman in Vancouver, B.C. George married Lieutenant Dorothy Duncan, WRNS, on March 30, 1946 and they had three children. George, often seen at parties sporting a monical from wardroom days, died in June 1989.
