Convoy HX 41.

This convoy departed Halifax on 8 May 1940.

It was made up of the following merchant vessels;
Chaucer (British, 5792 GRT, built 1929), Dalfonn (British (tanker), 9860 GRT, built 1928), Empire Commerce (British, 3845 GRT, built 1928), Everleigh (British, 5222 GRT, built 1930), Fowberry Tower (British, 4484 GRT, built 1929), Gregalia (British, 5802 GRT, built 1929), Harry G. Seidel (Panamanian (tanker), 11395 GRT, built 1930), Hartlebury (British, 5082 GRT, built 1934), Llangollen (British, 5056 GRT, built 1928), Loch Lomond (British, 5452 GRT, built 1934), Mabriton (British, 6694 GRT, built 1920), Manchester Division (British, 6048 GRT, built 1918), Nailsea Meadow (British, 4962 GRT, built 1937), Pacific Grove (British, 7117 GRT, built 1928), Rym (Norwegian, 1369 GRT, built 1919), Shakespear (British, 5029 GRT, built 1926), Sveve (Norwegian (tanker), 6313 GRT, built 1930) and Yang-Tse (French, 8150 GRT, built 1915).

On departure from Halifax the convoy was escorted by the armed merchant cruiser HMS Ranpura (Commodore 2nd cl. (RNR) O.H. Dawson, RN), destroyers HMCS Restigouche (Lt.Cdr. H.N. Lay, RN), HMCS St. Laurent (Lt.Cdr. H.G. De Wolf, RCN) and submarine Ajax (Lt.Cdr. T.F. Guimont).

Around 1745Q/9, in position 42°35'N, 58°32'W, the Canadian destroyers parted company to return to Halifax.

On 10 May, in position 41°36'N, 56°08'W, the Rym dropped out of the convoy, being unable to keep up. She arrived independently at Weymouth Bay on 23 May.

Around 0830P/14, the Bermuda section of the convoy (convoy BHX 41) joined the convoy. This were the following merchant vessels;
Anglo Norse (British (tanker), 7988 GRT, built 1914), British Reliance (British (tanker), 7000 GRT, built 1928), Brittany (British, 4772 GRT, built 192), Bulysses (British, 7519 GRT, built 1927), Charles Pratt (Panamanian (tanker), 10050 GRT, built 1916), Conch (British (tanker), 8376 GRT, built 1931), Dalcairn (British, 4608 GRT, built 1927), Daphnella (British (tanker), 8078 GRT, built 1938), Edwy R. Brown (British (tanker), 10455 GRT, built 1938), El Grillo (British (tanker), 7264 GRT, built 1922), Elona (British (tanker), 6192 GRT, built 1936), Eulima (British (tanker), 6207 GRT, built 1937), Housatonic (British (tanker), 5559 GRT, built 1919), Huntingdon (British, 11849 GRT, built 1920), Indianan (British, 5775 GRT, built 1919), Kent (British, 8697 GRT, built 1918), La Estancia (British, 5185 GRT, built 1940), Lacklan (British (tanker), 8670 GRT, built 1929), Middleton (British, 4297 GRT, built 1935), Oropesa (British, 14118 GRT, built 1920), San Casimiro (British (tanker), 8046 GRT, built 1936), San Conrado (British (tanker), 7982 GRT, built 1936), Scottish Chief (British, 7006 GRT, built 1928) and Trojan Star (British, 9037 GRT, built 1936).

The Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) tanker Cairndale (8129 GRT, built 1939) was also part of the Bermuda section of the convoy.

Around 0640Z/19, in position 50.05'N, 14.21'W, the destroyer HMS Mackay (Lt.Cdr.(Retd.) E. Adams, RN) joined. HMS Ranpura then parted company to return to Halifax.

On 20 May 1940 the convoy was joined by the sloop HMS Aberdeen (Cdr. H.P. Currey, RN). The convoy was then split into two sections.

The Irish Sea / west coast section was made up of the following merchant vessels;
Anglo Norse (arrived at Liverpool on 23 May), British Reliance (arrived at Liverpool on 23 May), Brittany (arrived at Liverpool on 23 May), Bulysses (arrived at Liverpool on 23 May), Cairndale (arrived in the Clyde on 23 May), Conch (arrived in the Clyde on 23 May), Dalcairn (arrived at Liverpool on 23 May), El Grillo (arrived at Liverpool on 23 May), Elona (arrived at Liverpool on 23 May), Everleigh (arrived at Avonmouth on 23 May), Fowberry Tower (arrived at Sharpness on 23 May), Gregalia (arrived in the Clyde on 23 May), Housatonic (arrived at Liverpool on 23 May), Indianan (arrived at Liverpool on 23 May), Loch Lomond (arrived at Belfast on 23 May), Mabriton (arrived at Avonmouth on 23 May), Manchester Division (arrived at Liverpool on 23 May), Middleton (arrived at Liverpool on 23 May), Oropesa (arrived at Liverpool on 23 May) and Sveve (arrived at Liverpool on 23 May). They were escorted by HMS Mackay which arrived at Liverpool on 22 May.

The Channel / east coast section was made up of the following merchant vessels;
Charles Pratt (arrived at Southampton on 23 May), Chaucer (arrived in the Downs on 23 May), Dalfonn (arrived at Brest on 22 May), Daphnella (arrived at Weymouth on 23 May), Edwy R. Brown (arrived in the Downs on 23 May), Empire Commerce (arrived at Weymouth on 23 May), Eulima (arrived in the Downs on 23 May), Harry G. Seidel (arrived in the Downs on 23 May), Hartlebury (arrived at Southampton on 23 May), Huntingdon (arrived at Weymouth on 23 May), Kent (arrived at Southampton on 23 May), La Estancia (arrived in the Downs on 23 May), Lacklan (arrived at Brest on 23 May), Llangollen (arrived at Weymouth on 23 May), Nailsea Meadow (arrived in the Downs on 23 May), Pacific Grove (arrived in the Downs on 23 May), Rym (arrived at Weymouth on 23 May), San Casimiro (arrived in the Downs on 23 May), San Conrado (arrived at Southampton on 23 May), Scottish Chief (arrived at St. Nazaire (Donges) on 23 May), Shakespear (arrived at Weymouth on 23 May), Trojan Star (arrived at Weymouth on 23 May) and Yang-Tse (arrived at Le Verdon on 23 May). They were escorted by HMS Aberdeen which arrived at Dover on 23 May.

The Ajax was to accompany the Channel section to the vicinity to the south of the Scilly Islands after which she was to proceed to Brest. (1)
