Career information
Alfred William Sprott was born 8 sept. 1893. Joined Royal Navy 15 may 1906, Lt. from 15 october 1915, and Lt.Cdr. from 15.10.1923.
Husband of Winifred [nee Hall] and they lived at Spring Cottage, Ludbrook, Ugborough Parish, Ivybridge from 1932 [until 1948 for Winifred].
Alfred was listed as Cdr [retired] on 1.10.1936, and he was briefly captain of HMS Aberdare [J.49] a Hunt class minesweeper from 24.9.1939 to October 1939 in Singapore, and he later captained HMS Dragonfly a Royal Navy river gunboat [585 tons, 197' long, 74 men, 3x 4” guns, 8 machine guns, max speed 17 knots] which had been operating on the Yangtse River and Hong Kong before the Japanese attacked Singapore in Febuary 1942. HMS Dragonfly sailed in the early hours of 14 February for Australia - the day that Singapore surrendered. Later that day they were attacked by aircraft and the first two bombs landed amidships and the ship was terminally damaged. Commander Sprott managed to beach his ship before she sank and a few of the crew and passengers survived later to become prisoners of the Japanese.
Alfred Sprott died on 14 feb 1942, aged 48,together with some 50 members of his crew.
