Around 1400A/19, the aircraft carrier HMS Furious (Capt. A.G. Talbot, DSO, RN) and the destroyers HMS Beverley (Cdr.(Retd.) E.F. Fitzgerald, RN) departed Liverpool to join convoy WS 5A.

Shortly after departure they joined the troop transport Rangitiki (British, 16698 GRT, built 1929) and the destroyer HMS Kipling (Cdr. A. St. Clair-Ford, RN) coming from Avonmouth.

Around 2200A/19, the destroyer HMS Kelvin (Cdr. J.H. Allison, DSO, RN) joined.

Around 0830N/6, the aircraft carrier HMS Furious (Capt. A.G. Talbot, DSO, RN), light cruiser HMS Delhi (Capt. A.S. Russell, RN) and the destroyers HMS Isis (Cdr. C.S.B. Swinley, DSC, RN) and HMS Encounter (Lt.Cdr. E.V.St.J. Morgan, RN) departed Freetown for Takoradi.

The light cruiser HMS Neptune (Capt. R.C. O'Conor, RN) was to join later at sea. (3)

At 1941N/25, the aircraft carrier HMS Furious (Capt. A.G. Talbot, DSO, RN and the destroyers HMS Duncan (Lt.Cdr. A.N. Rowell, RN) and HMS Foxhound (Cdr. G.H. Peters, DSC, RN) were ordered to leave Freetown at 0700N/26 and to overtake and join convoy SL 69. This order was cancelled at 0301N/26 but at 1121N/26 the ships were ordered to sail as soon as possible (they sailed around 1300N/26) to overtake the convoy which they did around 2300N/27. The destroyers were then detached to proceed to Bathurst to fuel.

HMS Furious (Capt. A.G. Talbot, DSO, RN) arrived at Belfast from Gibraltar. At Belfast she is taken in hand for a short refit. (5)

During the night of 15/16 April 1941, the Luftwaffe attacked Belfast with around 150 bombers. The aircraft carrier HMS Furious (Capt. A.G. Talbot, DSO, RN), refitting at Belfast, was damaged by German bombs. She was straddled by a stick of four bombs while berthed at Victoria Wharf. Damage to the structure was however slight.

5 May 1941
Around 0040B/5, HMS Furious (Capt. A.G. Talbot, DSO, RN), which is undergoing a short refit at the Harland & Wolff shipyard at Belfast, is hit by a small bomb during a German air raid. The bomb exploded in the lower hangar but did not penetrate the ships armoured deck. Also a near miss caused some minor damage to a funnel duct.

Around 2100A/5, HMS Furious departed Belfast of Liverpool where she arrived around 2125A/6.

At Liverpool she was to embark aircraft. (6)

Around 2355A/10, HMS Sheffield parted company with the carriers and the troop transport.

Around 1145B/11, HMS Furious, HMS Argus and the Nea Hellas were joined by the destroyers HMS Cossack (Capt. P.L. Vian, DSO and Bar, RN), HMS Maori (Cdr. R.E. Courage, DSO, DSC and Bar, RN) and HMS Sikh (Cdr. G.H. Stokes, RN).

Around 2200B/11, the destroyers HMS Vanquisher (Cdr. N.V. Dickinson, DSC, RN), HMS Winchelsea (Lt.Cdr. W.A.F. Hawkins, OBE, DSC, RN) joined.

Around 2200B/13, HMS Winchelsea parted company to proceed to Londonderry arriving there on the 14th.

HMS Furious and HMS Oribi arrived at Greenock around 0300A/22. HMS Oribi later went to Glasgow for post work-up repairs.

She was escorted in by the destroyers HMS Wivern (Cdr. M.D.C. Meyrick, RN) and HMS Vansittart (Lt.Cdr. T. Johnston, RN) which had joined around 0930Z/7. (13)

Around 1730Z/9, HMS Formidable (Capt. A.G. Talbot, DSO, RN) departed Freetown for Greenock. She was escorted by the destroyers HMS Wivern (Cdr. M.D.C. Meyrick, RN) and HMS Vansittart (Lt.Cdr. T. Johnston, RN).

Around 1315Z/11, just north of the Cape Verde Islands the destroyers parted company to proceed to Bathurst.

Around 1240N/15, in approximate position 47°40'N, 21°00'W, HMS Formidable was joined by the destroyer ORP Blyskawica (Kmdr.ppor. (Cdr.) L. Lichodziejewski) and the escort destroyers HMS Bicester (Lt.Cdr. S.W.F. Bennetts, RN) and HMS Zetland (Lt. J.V. Wilkinson, RN).

German U-boat U-331 was sunk in the Mediterranean north of Algiers in position 37°05'N, 02°27'E after she had been badly damaged by a Hudson aircraft. She signalled her surrender to a seaplane but was attacked and sunk by a torpedo-equipped aircraft Albacore from the British aircraft carrier HMS Formidable.

At 0430A/8, alarm was raised on ships present in Gibraltar harbour.

Italian ' human torpedoes ' had been discovered. Three Italian Maiale with two crew members each had departed their base ship, the Italian tanker Olterra at Algeciras. Two were discovered and the crew of one were killed and the crew of the other were captured. The third Maiale managed to return to the Olterra with only the Maiale's driver. The other crew member was lost.

At the time of this failed attack the following capital ships were present at Gibraltar; battleships HMS Nelson (Capt. H.B. Jacomb, RN, flying the flag of flying the flag of Vice-Admiral E.N. Syfret, CB, RN), HMS Rodney (Capt. J.W. Rivett-Carnac, DSC, RN), battlecruiser HMS Renown (Capt. C.S. Daniel, CBE, DSO, RN) and the aircraft carriers HMS Formidable (Capt. A.G. Talbot, DSO, RN) and HMS Furious (Capt. T.O. Bulteel, RN). (19)

They were escorted by the destroyers HMS Quilliam (Capt. S.H. Carlill, DSO, RN), HMS Quail (Lt.Cdr. R.F. Jenks, RN), HMS Queenborough (Cdr. E.P. Hinton, DSO and Bar, MVO, RN), ORP Piorun (Kmdr.por. (Cdr.) S.T. Dzienisiewicz) and the escort destroyers HMS Hurworth (Cdr. R.H. Wright, DSC, RN), HMS Croome (Lt. H.D.M. Slater, RN), RHS Kanaris (?) and RHS Adrias (?).
