HMS Lotus (Lt. C.S. Thomas, RNR) picked up survivors while on escort duty for convoy UGS.18 Leaving Hampton Roads on the 15th September for Port Said arriving 13th October 1943. Ship SS Fort Fitzgerald bound from New York to Alexandria, the ship was near Cape Tenes, west of Algiers (36deg42N/01deg17E). when she was severely damaged by German aircraft and had to be sunk the following day by one of the escorting destroyers. Several of the crew were killed and survivors dropped off in Algiers. (1)
