Career information

1917 Aylwin College Sept.1922-31st March 1926 attended Merchant Taylor School, Crosby, Liverpool. 1927 Certificate of Proficiency as a Watcher in Radiotelegraphy. 1929. SS Atreus 1930. ss Oanfa-as Midshipman. 1931.23rd June-30th August. M.V. Orestes as 4th Mate 1931-1936 . China Navigation Company , Shanghai as Watchkeeping Officer . Mainly on the Yangtse River. On 18 assignments involving 11 different ships as 2nd Mate and then 1st Mate. 1936, Sept awarded Masters Ticket. 1937. Bibby Line 4th Officer. 1938. Temporarily left the navy for a shore job and became a qualified Sanitary Inspector (June).Based at the Kingston Upon Hull Port Health Authority 1939, Jan. married. When war broke out rejoined navy. 1940. HMS Osprey 31st July Sub.Lieutenant.R.N.R. 1940. C.O. of the trawler Cape Argona which was working as convoy escort in the Western Approaches. Oct 26th 1940. 300 miles west of Ireland Cape Argona received distress signals from the liner Empress of Britain which had been attacked and was on fire .So was the first ship to arrive and rescue survivors from the lifeboats and also scare off a circling U-boat. 1942-late 1943. C.O.of H.M.S.Pict. 1944 , Jan. transfered to H.M.S. Geranium.

6th June D Day on the Geranium at Sword Beach next to the HMS Warspite. Providing Naval gunfire support for the Allies at the Normandy Landings. Dispersal - 21 Oct 1945. Returned to Port Health Authority. Decorations - 1939-45 Star. War Service Medal 1939-45. The Defence Medal. Atlantic Star.

The British merchant Garmula is torpedoed and sunk by German U-boat U-752 about 200 nautical miles south-west of Freetown in position 05°32'N, 14°45'W. HMS Pict (Lt.Cdr. W.N.H. Faichney, RNR) later picks up 61 survivors.
