After a period of damage repairs to her wireless masts while at anchor off Greenock, the aircraft carrier HMS Furious (Capt. T.H. Troubridge, RN) departed Greenock around 0015A/28 for Plymouth where repairs were to be completed at the Devonport Dockyard. She was also to undergo a short refit and a docking.
Escort during the passage from the Clyde to Plymouth was provided by the destroyers HMS Hardy (Capt. B.A. Warburton-Lee, RN), HMS Fearless (Cdr. K.L. Harkness, RN), HMS Firedrake (Lt.Cdr. S.H. Norris, DSC, RN) and HMS Kimberley (Lt.Cdr. R.G.K. Knowling, RN). (1)

Around 1328A/20, a trawlers was sighted. HMS Imogen was then detached to investigate and she subsequently captured the German trawler Rhein (254 GRT, built 1907) and brought her into Harstad.

The aircraft carrier HMS Furious (Capt. T.H. Troubridge, RN) is undocked.
She then departed Liverpool for Freetown. On board were 3 Fulmars and 34 Hurricanes which were to be transported to Takoradi from where they were to be flown overland to Egypt.
In company with HMS Furious was the transport New Zealand Star (British, 10740 GRT, built 1935). They were escorted by the destroyers HMS Havelock (Cdr. E.H. Thomas, RN) and HMS Hesperus (Lt.Cdr. D.G.F.W. MacIntyre, RN).

25 Nov 1940
Around 0900N/25, the aircraft carrier HMS Furious (Capt. T.H. Troubridge, RN), light cruiser HMS Dido (Capt. H.W.U. McCall, RN) and the destroyers HMS Foxhound (Cdr. G.H. Peters, DSC, RN) and HMS Fortune (Lt.Cdr. E.N. Sinclair, RN) arrived at Freetown. The destroyers, coming from Gibraltar which they had departed on 20 November, had joined the carrier and light cruiser around 1200N/22 in approximate position 25°30'N, 15°50'W.
Around 2330N/25, they all departed Freetown for Takoradi.
HMS Furious commenced flying off the Hurricanes and Fulmars to Takoradi in the afternoon of 27 November. This continued until 29 November. HMS Dido parted company and arrived at Takoradi around 1600N/27.
Around 1030N/28, HMS Foxhound was detached to fuel at Takoradi. She rejoined around 1410N/28 when HMS Fortune was detached to fuel at Takoradi.
Around 0825N/29, HMS Dido and HMS Fortune rejoined HMS Furious and HMS Foxhound.
They all arrived at Freetown around 1130N/1. (23)

Around 1700N/3, the aircraft carrier HMS Furious (Capt. T.H. Troubridge, RN), light cruiser HMS Dido (Capt. H.W.U. McCall, RN) and the destroyers HMS Foxhound (Cdr. G.H. Peters, DSC, RN) and HMS Fortune (Lt.Cdr. E.N. Sinclair, RN) departed Freetown. HMS Furious and HMS Dido were to return to the U.K.
Around 1445N/4, HMS Foxhound and HMS Fortune were detached to return to Freetown where they arrived around 0815N/5.

At 0755C/8, while approaching the harbour of Diego Suarez, HMS Indomitable (Capt. T.H. Troubridge, RN, flying the flag of Rear-Admiral D.W. Boyd, CBE, DSC, RN) is attacked by the Vichy French submarine Monge (Capitaine de corvette (Lt.Cdr.) M.A.J. Delort). A torpedo is sighted and evaded. The destroyers HMS Active (Lt.Cdr. M.W. Tomkinson, RN) and HMS Panther (Lt.Cdr. R.W. Jocelyn, RN) subsequently sank the attacker with depth charges.

Around 0300B/24, the damaged aircraft carrier HMS Indomitable (Capt. T.H. Troubridge, RN) departed Gibraltar for Liverpool. She is escorted by the destroyers HMS Lightning (Cdr. H.G. Walters, DSC, RN), HMS Ithuriel (Lt.Cdr. D.H. Maitland-Makgill-Crichton, DSC, RN) and the escort destroyers HMS Ledbury (Lt.Cdr. R.P. Hill, RN) and HMS Bramham (Lt. E.F. Baines, RN).
Around 2100A/25, HMS Ledbury and HMS Bramham parted company to proceed to Londonderry. They were unable to accompany the carrier all the way to the U.K. at high speed due to their fuel capacity being insufficient. (42)
28 Aug 1942
Around 1030A/28, the damaged aircraft carrier HMS Indomitable (Capt. T.H. Troubridge, RN) and the destroyers HMS Lightning (Cdr. H.G. Walters, DSC, RN) and HMS Ithuriel (Lt.Cdr. D.H. Maitland-Makgill-Crichton, DSC, RN) arrived off the Bar Lightvessel.
HMS Indomitable subsequently entered the Gladstone graving dock at Liverpool at 1345A/28. She then commenced de-ammunitioning on completion of which she was taken in hand for repairs and refit. (41)
