Career information
Captain Charles Purcell Cecil was awarded his first Navy Cross for his command of destroyer squadron FIVE while engaging the Japanese north of Santa Cruz Islands on 26 Oct 1942. His command was on the destroyer USS Porter (DD 356) that was lost in the battle.
Cecil then took command of the cruiser USS Helena in Nov 1942 - the ship was lost in July 1943 during the battle of Kula Golf. Rear Admiral Charles Purcell Cecil was killed when his plane crashed at a Pacific base on 31 July 1944.
