The Japanese submarine I-25 is possibly sunk with depth charges some 110 nautical miles north-west of Espiritu Santo in position 13°10'S, 165°27'E by the US destroyer USS Ellet.
29 Sep 1943
Just before midnight on September 29, 1943, the USS Patterson collided with the USS McCalla (DD-488). Both ships' bows were sheared off at about the #1 gun turret. Three crewmen on the Patterson were killed and 10 were injured in the collision. The Captain of the McCalla was Lt.Cdr Halford A. Knoertzer who was "1st Lieutenant" on the Patterson when she was commissioned on September 22, 1937. (2)
