Career information
Captain Calhoun, USN commanded USS Dewey during the infamous typhoon of December 1945 which wreaked havoc on Admiral Halsey's Task Force in the Philippine Sea. At one point during the storm, Dewey rolled so perilously that the inclinometer registered past its top reading of 73 degrees. Officially, Dewey was reported as rolling to 75 degrees! Almost parallel to the sea, and some are convinced that she went to 80 degrees! His book on the storm, "Typhoon: The Other Enemy" is an excellent recounting of the event.Events related to this officer
