Career information

Alexander Somerville Wotherspoon graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1915. In World War I, Alexander Somerville Wotherspoon was a Lieutenant on a destroyer in the North Atlantic fighting German U-boats.

Alexander Somerville Wotherspoon was Captain of the Heavy Cruiser U.S.S. Louisville in World War II fighting in the Alaskan Aleutian Islands campaign. Alexander Somerville Wotherspoon was also a Captain of a large Convoy Troop Ship in World War II, landing U.S Marines on Okinawa and Iwo Jima. Alexander Somerville Wotherspoon was the squadron leader of a fleet of Convoy Troop Ships in World War II landing U.S Marines on Okinawa and Iwo Jima. Alexander Somerville Wotherspoon retired as a Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy, in the late 1950's.

In the 1930s Alexander Somerville Wotherspoon, USN, was Superintendent of the US Navy Yard in Washington, DC, and supervised construction of large 12" to 16" naval guns for U.S. cruisers and battleships. Alexander Somerville Wotherspoon, USN, during World War II, for one year, he also was Superintendent again of the US Navy Yard in Washington, DC, and supervised construction of large 12" to 16" naval guns for U.S. cruisers and battleships.
