Ralph Spearing Winder or 'Spear' as he was known to his family was the son of
Ralph Humphries Winder and
Edith Winder nee Cole. He was an only child. His mother died when he was 6. He grew up in Belle View, Manchester and attended Macclesfied Grammar School.
