Born- 8th December 1912 Sherborne, Dorset Died- 2nd. August 1970 Folkstone,Kent natural causes... heart attack age 57. Parents-Ernest John [Jack] Barnes and Lily Barnes[Bonner] 1924- Maritime education on the "Arethusa" training ship Upnor Rochester Kent 1928- Merchant Navy.... 1940- 21st May Captain SS Bawtry under Stuka attack at Dunkirk and sunk in the harbour after several hours of fending off attacks with the vessel,s 12 pounder gun. The ship is sunk with no loss of life at the quay. For this action LT/CMDR Barnes and his gunner are mentioned in the London Gazette. Other known vessels associated with Sid Barnes: Medway Queen Queen of the Channel HMS Snapdragon Hms Lady Hogarth HMS Thallasa. 1940 December married Lorna Irene Grace Roberts in Chatham Kent. 1941 July 31st a son is born.... Brian Sidney Barnes. 1943 July 16th a daughter is born.
