Notes on event | At 04.52 hours on 10 Sep 1941, U-652 fired two single torpedoes at ships of convoy SC-42 northeast of Cape Farewell, heard two detonations after three minutes and reported two ships probably sunk. In fact, Tahchee and Baron Pentland were damaged. The Tachhee in station #93 was hit by a torpedo just forward of the engine room, caught fire and was abandoned by the crew. Later the crew reboarded the vessel and managed to extinguish the flames. HMCS Orillia (K 119) (T/LtCdr W.E.S. Briggs, RCNR) of the 24th Escort Group came across her while looking for survivors behind convoy and took the tanker in tow for Iceland at a speed of 7 knots. En route the corvette even had to refuel from the damaged tanker to safely arrive at Reykjavik after 700 miles on 15 September. Briggs was both praised and criticized for his actions because he had left convoy without reporting it, but was later awarded the DSC. After temporary repairs Tahchee was towed to the Tyne in June 1942, repaired and returned to service in November 1942. | ||
