Notes on event | The small motor tugboat Letitia Porter was on transfer from Canada to the Middle East aboard the Koenjit when this ship was sunk by U-156 (Hartenstein) in position 15°30N/52°40W on 13 May 1942. It seems that the tug floated free after the ship sank as it was later spotted by the survivors in the lifeboats from some distance. At 11.30 hours on 5 June 1942, U-69 sank a small abandoned tug with seven high explosive rounds from the deck gun and 20 rounds from the 20mm AA gun in approx. 18°15N/53°45W. This must have been the Letitia Porter which apparently drifted about 175 miles to the north-northwest in the 23 days after Koenjit was sunk. |
