History | Laid down as British War Lemon for The Shipping Controller, completed in September 1919 as Coatsworth for Robert Stanley Shipping Co, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. 1929 sold to R.S. Dalgliesh Ltd, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. 1939 sold to Yugoslavia and renamed Dinaric for Kvarner Brodarsko DD, Susak. 1941 taken over by Britain and transferred to Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). | ||
Notes on event | At 06.46 hours on 6 July 1942 the Dinaric (Master Marijan Zadrijevac) in convoy QS-15 was hit on the starboard side amidships in the engine room by one torpedo from U-132 in the St. Lawrence River about 10 miles south by east of Cap Chat, Quebec. The explosion killed four crew members on watch below and caused the ship to settle with a list of about 25° to port, but she righted herself a bit after a while. The surviving 28 crew members and six gunners (the ship was armed with one 12pdr and four machine guns) abandoned ship in the port lifeboat as the boat on starboard had been blown away. The survivors then witnessed how the U-boat was attacked by HMCS Drummondville (J 253) (Lt J.P. Fraser, RCNR), preventing a further attack on the ship and were afterwards picked up by the minesweeper and landed at Sydney on 7 July. Dinaric remained afloat on her cargo of timber, but foundered before she could be salvaged in 49°15N/66°43W at 15.55 hours on 9 July. | ||
