Award Citation as published in November 1943:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Commander Anthony Leo Danis, United States Navy, for distinguished service in line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the destroyer USS Kearney (DD 432), in bringing his ship safely to port, under most difficult circumstances, after that vessel was torpedoed on 17 October 1941. Captain Danis skillfully utilized every item of equipment to the greatest advantage and succeeded in keeping his ship afloat and in restoring her fighting efficiency. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Navy of the United States.

Captain Anthony Leo Danis, United States Navy, was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States in the Aerological Section, Operations Division, staff of CinCPac/Poa, from March 1945 to 1 September 1945.
