Personal information

Eric Alexander Brown had served in the First World War and was injured during the Battle of the Somme. He later joined the Merchant Navy and suffered two shipwrecks in successive years on either side of Cape Horn as apperentice in sailing ships. On 14 Mar, 1941, he was the master of the British steam merchant Western Chief (5759 grt), a straggler of convoy SC-24, which was torpedoed and sunk by the Italian submarine Emo (Roselli-Lorenzini) in 58°52N,21°13W. He survived the sinking and also the loss of Baron Jedburgh in March 1945.
