Personal information
Austin Byrne was rescued from one of the lifeboats from Induna and did not loose any limbs. As far as he is aware he was the only survivor from his lifeboat that returned to active service with the Royal Navy. He later made a further trip to North Russia on the Fort McMurray, also made a trip from the US East coast to Southern Italy on a ship loaded with ammunition and served aboard a merchant ship supporting the Allied landings in the Normandy in June 1944.
More details about his war experiences can be read in the article “Through Fire and Ice”, published on the website of BBC or seen in the interview videos hosted by Legasee.
