Edward Whitney was trapped in the wireless room when Empire Conveyor was torpedoed as the door could not be opened. After he freed himself the lifeboats had already cast off against the orders of the master, so he had to jump overboard and clung to a Carley float together with the ship's cook who drowned before the raft was located by the lifeboats after several hours.
