Personal information
Richard F. Sutton was on his first sea voyage when CYCLOPS was torpedoed. He eventually completed his apprenticeship with Alfred & Holt Co, becoming the youngest Second Officer in the company’s history at age 22. In 1949 he left the Merchant Navy and was employed in the civil service until retiring in 1974 and emigrating to Australia. After a second career in Australia with the national broadcaster he retired and devoted a number of years to building an ocean cruising yacht. He was also a member of the Volunteer Coastguard, so his love of the sea never left him.
