Personal information

Arthur Newman was born and raised in Jersey in the Channel Islands. As a young man he worked as a fisherman and also helped crew the racing yawl Klang which had been built to race for the Americas Cup and was owned by his friend Phil Le Marquand. Quite early in the war he was part of the four man crew of the Klang that assisted in the evacuation of Allied troops from St. Malo in June 1940. Immediately following this, he evacuated his wife and four children to England, while joining the Merchant Navy himself. Arthur survived the sinking of Jasper Park and was in charge of one of the lifeboats with 18 men on board.
