From Accrington Observer Sat 11 July 1942;
News has been received that Third Engineer John James Lancaster, 10 Commercial St, Rishton son of Mr & Mrs W Lancaster is missing following the sinking of his ship. The letter conveying the sad news to his wife states that all but three of the crew have been saved. 3rd Engineer Lancaster who is 38, has two sons. He has been in the Merchant Navy for 14 years having adopted it as a career. He has travelled widely visiting 40 different countries and he has circumnavigated the globe on at least 3 occasions.
As a boy he attended Hyndburn Park School and later served his time as a fitter at Howard & Bulloughs. he also attended Antly Methodist Sunday School. His father who is also employed at Howard & Bulloughs is a member of the comities of the Accrington Victoria Hospital, the Workpeople's Hospital fund and the Chaigeley Manor Convlesant Home. Another of Mr Lancaster's sons is Chief Engineer on the Nigerian Railway, and there are two daughters, one of whom is in Canada.
