Personal information

Husband of Lois Swabey (nee Ridley). George T.C.P. Swabey entered the Royal Naval College Britannia in January 1895 and became gunnery officer. He was appointed Naval Observation Officer to the Land Forces employed during the Gallipoli operations aboard the battleship HMS Lord Nelson from April 1915 to January 1916, awarded a DSO and mentioned in despatches for his actions. Between the wars he held several senior appointments and was eventually retired as Vice-Admiral in 1935. Recalled in September 1939 to assume the duties of a convoy commodore he served until surviving the sinking of Alfred Jones in June 1941 and then hoisted his flag in Portland harbor in planning and subsequent execution of the launching of one US Army Division to assault the Normandy beaches in Operation Neptune in June 1944.
