Personal information
Arthur Newbould had been in the water for some time before being picked up by a lifeboat after the sinking of Muncester Castle. He apparently swallowed some chemicals, possibly diesel oil, that made it necessary for him to spent some time in Capetown to recover. There he was befriended by Dot Baker of Elm Court Mansions, who was a volunteer worker and then sent several food parcels to his family in England. She also visited them sometime after the war. Arthur was subsequently posted to the Middle East, then to Italy until demobilized in January 1946. He later married his penfriend and had three children.Sources
