Personal information
Son of Robert and Margaret Reid, of Glasgow. His father was lost as chief engineer aboard Tuskar, mined and sunk by U-80 on 6 September 1917.
Robert Reid had been the chief officer of the British steam merchant Lylepark which was sunk by the German raider Michel in the South Atlantic on 11 June 1942. He was rescued by Avila Star and taken to Freetown, but remained aboard for repatriation. Robert took charge of a lifeboat after Avila Star was sunk, but it was never found.
