Son of Walter Farquharson and Margaret Paterson Young Stephenson, of Wormit, Fife. Walter was educated at Wormit and Newport, was a member of Boy Scouts and joined the Merchant Navy at the age of 16. He survived the sinking of Baron Dechmont in January 1943, reaching the Brazilian coast after a hazardous journey in a damaged lifeboat and was flown to the USA, but was lost as passenger during repatriation when City of Pretoria was sunk with all hands.
