Ghansham Soni was on watch on the bridge when Helen Moller was torpedoed and thrown to the lower bridge by the explosion with injuries that left him helpless and half conscious. He was discovered by a deliberate search of the ship by Petty Officer Eric Seivers who carried him to the lifeboat that was later located by Empire Confidence on 8 Jun, 1944. Ghansham joined the RINVR after his recovery. He was with the Civil Aviation Department after India's independence and later with the Inland Water Transport. He returned to sea in 1978 and sailed for another five years before retiring.
