Personal information
Son of Samuel Carasov (a Russian photographer) and Josephine Gilmour, of Glasgow. Awarded The Royal Humane Society's Certificate for life saving.
Alexander John Gilmour or Sandy, as he was known to the family, was named after his uncle Alexander Gilmour who served with the 1st Glasgow Highlanders during WW2. His grandfather William Gilmour and his uncle William both served in the Merchant Navy during WW1. His mother later married Mr. Perera from Ceylon, who served in the Merchant Navy during both wars. His half brother Louis Perera served in the British Army and his half sister Naomi Perera served with the land army during WW2.
