George Albert O'Loughlin had served in World War 1 as private in the Royal Army Medical Corps from 1915 to 1919, including service in the East African campaign from August 1917 to February 1919. In 1938 he joined the Merchant Navy as hospital steward and on 19 September 1939 embarked on Accra until she was sunk. George survived the sinking and then served as hospital attendant aboard Reina del Pacifico from November 1940 to September 1942 and on Stirling Castle from October 1942 until May 1945.
