Personal information
Son of Karl Fagerlund, of Fosnavågen, Møre og Romsdal. He was later taken prisoner when the Norwegian motor merchant Kattegat was captured and sunk by the German raider Michel in the South Atlantic on 20 May 1942. Initially taken to Japan the prisoners were then sent to Europe aboard the German blockade runner Rhakotis, which was sunk by the British cruiser HMS Scylla west of Cape Finisterre on 3 January 1943. He made landfall at Coruna, Spain and travelled to Gibraltar, eventually arriving in the UK on 29 January 1943.
