Personal information
Joseph Charles Holley had been a crew member of the hospital ship HMHS Atlantis for nearly two years without being home and was returning to Liverpool from Durban via Capetown as passenger aboard the Orcades when she was torpedoed. He abandoned ship in a lifeboat with some nuns in it, was picked up by the Polish steam merchant Narwik and landed at Capetown on 12 October.
