Personal information
Son of Llewellyn and Johanna Mary Francis, of Cardiff. His uncle David Francis was lost while serving as chief engineer officer aboard Shrewsbury, which was sunk by the German heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper in convoy SLS-64 on 12 February 1941. His brother Frank Francis also served in the Merchant Navy and survived the sinking of Daydawn in November 1940.
