Personal information
J.E. Franks was the sole survivor of the sinking of Pacific. He had been on lookout duty on the port wing of the bridge when the ship was torpedoed and rushed into the wheelhouse to sound the general alarm. She sank so rapidly that he was sucked down before even reaching his lifeboat station and clung to a hatch cover after surfacing. After about one hour he swam to a raft that had floated free and was picked up by a Icelandic trawler some time later.
