Award Citation as published in London Gazette on 5 January 1943:
The ship, when sailing alone, was torpedoed. The Chief Officer, with 36 men in his boat, decided to make for land and so get help for the other survivors on rafts, with whom he left three weeks provisions and water. By his leadership and skill Chief Officer McQuiston brought 36 people to safety and his efforts led to the early rescue of the other survivors.
