Personal information
Son of John Frederick and Elizabeth Alice Kirby, of Northwood, Ramsgate. Francis John Kirby survived the attack on HMS Cassandra and had to refit electrics after the destroyer was torpedoed. He was part of the skeleton crew left on board and carried out repairs during the winter 1944/45, so he was not at home when his son Rex was born in March 1945. His only brother Reginald Frederick Kirby had died on 19 Jul, 1940, after contracting pneumonia on the Dunkirk beaches while serving as Private in the Royal Army Service Corps.
