George Williams was officially discharged from Merchant Navy service on 24 January 1946. He survived numerous Atlantic convoys, Mediterranean convoys and D-Day landings, was torpedoed and shipwrecked twice and came under enemy air attacks. Throughout his entire 7 year career at sea, having served on 17 ships (twice on Alnwick), he maintained the highest rating Very good, was never logged for ill-discipline and was not subject to any disciplinary action on any of the ships he served on. He was also a qualified gunner for a 20mm anti-aircraft gun.
George was a very quiet, polite and understated man, who rarely talked about his WW2 experiences. To his family and many descendants he is considered a very British Hero.
