John Weir Murphy was rescued by HMCS Minas after the sinking of Empire Sailor and taken to hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Suffering with pulmonary oedema he then stayed with a French Canadian family until fit to return to the UK. In May 1987 he died of an airway obstruction caused by the gas poisoning during the war. His widow was paid a compensation and she received a war widows pension when his case was finalized after his death.
