William Swinchin swam to a nearby raft after the sinking of Etrib and survived amazing 77 days at sea until being rescued by U-214 on 29 August. He remained aboard for more than a month, landed at Brest on 9 October and was taken to the PoW camp Marlag and Milag Nord (PoW No. 875).
