Rodrick Cross MacDonald from Isle of Barra survived the sinking of Pacific Ranger and was in the lifeboat that came ashore in Ireland. He later told his son how helpful the U-boat commander was regards rations for lifeboats as they were given a choice of prisoner of war or lifeboats and they choose later.
