William (Bill) is the son of Mary-Ann and Luke Dodd (who fought as a Corporal in WWI and was badly wounded in Gallipoli and heavily gassed in France).

Following the sinking of the Springbank, Bill was given 2 weeks survivor leave - he returned to Ashington and married Doris Dodd in 1941. He was on the Wolsey Destroyer Ship from 1942 until 1944.

After the war, Bill and Doris had 2 children: Carole and Janice. Bill has 6 grandchildren. William Dodd's younger brother, Robert Harle Dodd, also fought in the Royal Navy during WWII.
